Peru 2025
Healing the Children Rocky Mountains returned to hospital Dos de Mayo in Lima, Peru November 9-14, 2025, for our 14th medical mission to Peru. It was incredibly successful, and we made a huge impact. During the week we were able to help almost 700 children in need. We performed 141 surgical procedures, provided free hearing tests and new hearing aids to 94 children, provided free eye exams and new glasses for 315 children, and provided 149 sessions of speech and swallowing therapy.
One of the most amazing things is that Healing the Children Rocky Mountains was awarded the Peruvian Congressional Medal of Honor for helping almost 5000 children over the years in Peru. This was an incredible honor. The government official expressed gratitude from the government that we have been helping some of the most vulnerable and poor in their county and hope that we can partner with them to continue these missions indefinitely. It is wonderful to have such local support in Peru!
As an example of our mission being able to reach children who would never be able to receive care on their own and come from some of the most remote regions; I would like to share the story of a little 6-month-old named Sandi. Her mother brought her 3 days travel to Lima to get cleft lip surgery by our team. She is from a small village of 200 people who live in the remote regions of the Amazon rain forest. They had to travel 2 days by boat down the tributaries of the Amazon just to reach public transportation where they then took a bus and an airplane to come to Lima. In their village they have no electricity or running water. They fish and hunt for food with spears. They have no jobs or money. Their dialect is not Spanish. No one in their village had ever been born with a cleft lip before. And yet a community health worker who travels among the small villages visited their community and was able to get them in touch with our organization and mission. Peruvian medical students were able to help coordinate travel and meet them in Lima and help them to a hotel by the hospital. The mom was so happy and did not know that treatment was possible for her daughter. She and Sandi both left a huge impression on our team, and everyone left smiling after a very successful surgery. .
